Discover how missing backups can cost millions, disrupt operations, and threaten legal standing—and how CloudAlly safeguards your Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Salesforce, and more with unlimited snapshots, point-in-time recovery, and audit-ready compliance.

Secure your business-critical data with our backup and recovery solution

When you add to the equation the likelihood of employee errors and the frequency of malware attacks and security breaches, you have a significant cybersecurity gap that can cause business-critical data loss without any chance of recovery.

Box is a powerful solution. However, native options to restore deleted items are time-bound, destructive (overwrite existing data),  and cumbersome.  Moreover, once your data has been expunged from Deleted files, it’s permanently gone.

Although your data is hosted by Box, maintaining control and protection of your business data in case of security threats or accidental deletion is ultimately your company’s responsibility. Box states, “After a recovery window, all files will be permanently deleted within 60 days.“ As do Gartner and Forrester. Data regulatory laws like the GDPR and HIPAA also mandate demonstrable recoverability.

FAQ

The following are frequently asked questions about backup for Box, data retention policies, and data recovery options within our backup solution:

Box Professional protects your data through continuous redundancy rather than traditional backups. Every file uploaded into Box is instantly replicated across multiple, secure data centers. But if you need automated, daily, or continuous backups—useful for events such as disaster recovery—a third-party solution such as OpentText CloudAlly Box Backup is needed.

Box does not enforce a default retention policy. Retention settings are available through Box Governance, an add-on or included in certain Enterprise plans. With Governance, admins can define how long content must be retained, prevent deletion during that period, and choose what happens when the retention period ends (release or permanent deletion).

When you delete a file in Box, it moves to your Trash folder and stays there for 30 days by default (admins can adjust this period). After that, Box permanently deletes the content and it cannot be recovered.

Box's trash content limitation: By default, Box stores files and folders in the trash for only 30 days (though Box administrators of business and enterprise accounts can adjust this).

Top IT analysts advise third-party backup: Industry experts at Gartner and Forrester advise organizations to not assume that SaaS providers will offer backup as part of the service, or provide interfaces that backup vendors can use to access data.

Audits and regulations mandate it: Data protection laws like the GDPR, HIPAA, and SoX mandate demonstrable recoverability.

SaaS data loss happens frequently: Industry reports show that one in three companies experiences SaaS data loss, and 60 percent of data breaches are caused by human error.

Yes. A user can restore the data to a different Box account.

In order to run backup of co-admins, backup should be done using account with an admin role. Below is a link that explains the difference between admin and co-admin accounts.
